For nearly fifty years, one of the most powerful signals in the cattle market could be recognized from the back row of a sale barn. A black hide.
That wasn’t an accident. Certified Angus Beef built one of the most successful branded beef programs in agricultural history around something that could be seen from a packing plant catwalk: a predominantly solid black animal. It solved a problem because nobody could reliably verify breed on a carcass.
Today, that world is changing. DNA testing is becoming cheaper, genomic evaluations are becoming more important, and the beef industry can increasingly evaluate cattle based on what’s inside the hide rather than the color of it.
This week’s story is about what happens when breed associations stop competing on appearance and start competing on prediction. Because once the industry can read the animal directly, the hide stops being the best available evidence.
