Walking the Angus Tightrope
For much of its history, the Angus breed has enjoyed a remarkably strong position in the American beef industry. Angus cattle dominate the seedstock business. Angus-influenced cattle are prevalent throughout commercial herds. And Certified Angus Beef is one of the most recognized brands in the food industry.
But the cattle industry is changing, and those changes present some important questions for leadership at the American Angus Association (AAA).
At the center of that discussion is a fundamental question:
How does AAA and its subsidiary Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) expand relevance in the broader cattle industry while continuing to serve – and maintain the peace within – its traditional Angus membership?
Since its creation in 2007, AGI has primarily focused on genetic evaluation of registered Angus cattle. But the growth of BxD has created an entirely new source of cattle, product and, most perhaps most importantly, information.
Today, an estimated 4 to 5 million BxD calves are being produced annually in the United States, and most of them are sired by Angus bulls. These cattle generate valuable information about a wealth of traits – reproduction, gestation length, birth weight, calving ease, reproduction, health, carcass quality and ultimately profitability, to name a few.
The challenge for Angus is that much of this information is now being collected by private companies and organizations and at a much more aggressive pace than Angus. Some may already possess more commercially relevant information on Angus-sired BxD cattle than AGI/AAA, but that information is often proprietary, owned by private companies.
Even a powerful and well-heeled dairy organization this fall is looking at getting into the BxD data game.
All of this poses a threat to Angus’ decades-long position in the data and genetic evaluation business.
What’s unique to Angus—and largely absent among its competitors—is a long-standing tension within AAA membership that, more recently, spilled over into the broader industry. All of this came to a head in 2025 when the Angus Foundation was awarded nearly $5 million from the Bezos Earth Fund to research methane emissions in cattle.
That experience undoubtedly has bred caution within the hallowed halls of AAA, and Angus most likely is in no hurry to move aggressively (or to publicize the limited work it’s already doing) on BxD.
After all, AAA exists to serve its members, and its genetic resources were built over generations by Angus breeders. Historically, some members have tapped the brakes when it’s come to using Association resources to evaluate cattle outside the registered Angus population.
Yet the most valuable data for future genetic improvement for the entire beef industry may come from cattle that were never registered as Angus – and never saw a blade of green grass.
That doesn't diminish the value of the Angus breed. If anything, it demonstrates the influence Angus genetics now have throughout the beef industry.
The challenge for Angus leadership will be determining how to participate in this changing landscape while ensuring its members remain central to the value created by the data, technology and programs that they built to benefit their own farms and ranches.
